A 17th-Century Masterpiece Reborn: Gambas, Cellos da Spalla, and Custom Carbon Fiber Cases

At A‑Case, we are proud to have contributed to a project that brings centuries of musical tradition into the modern world, protecting historic-inspired instruments with precision-crafted carbon fiber cases.

Reviving the 17th-Century Chest of Viols

The “Chest of Viols”, first described by English musician Thomas Mace in 1676, was a set of six perfectly matched viols — two basses, two tenors, and two trebles — designed for ensemble balance and harmony. For centuries, this concept inspired musicians and luthiers, symbolizing precision, artistry, and tonal excellence.

In March 2024, this historical vision came to life thanks to Soma Salat-Zakariás and his ensemble, The Little Light Consort, in collaboration with luthier Francisco Pecchia. Together, they crafted six viols inspired by Mace’s ideal:

This set bridges history and modern performance, combining historical design with contemporary craftsmanship.

A-Case’s Contribution: Custom Carbon Fiber Instrument Cases

As specialists in premium carbon fiber instrument cases, A‑Case was honored to protect these extraordinary instruments. Our contribution included:

  • Six custom-fit cases (four for viols, two for cellos da spalla)
  • Lightweight yet durable construction for safe transport
  • Climate-stable protection to preserve tone and wood
  • Finished in RAL 6034 blue to complement the instruments’ elegance

Our cases ensure that these historic-inspired instruments travel safely, perform flawlessly, and retain their beauty for generations.

Collaboration, Craftsmanship, and Passion

This project highlights the power of collaboration and shared dedication:

  • Musicians and luthiers uniting to revive historical instruments
  • Case makers providing modern protection without compromising craftsmanship
  • A project that celebrates artistry, sound quality, and attention to detail

For musicians, collectors, and fine instrument dealers, it’s a reminder that excellence depends on careful collaboration and respect for tradition.

Why This Matters for Musicians and Instrument Dealers

Projects like this showcase the value of investing in:

  • High-quality matched instruments: Ensures balance and harmony for ensembles
  • Premium instrument protection: Carbon fiber cases preserve the sound and structure of fine instruments
  • Partnerships in craftsmanship: Collaboration between musicians, luthiers, and makers elevates the final result

By combining historical insight with modern materials, the Chest of Viols revival demonstrates how music, art, and innovation can coexist beautifully.
